Theotokos Call to Humility

The Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Call for Humility” refers to the type of Hodegetria. Such images help people to approach, reunite with God, provide assistance in any affairs, troubles, strengthen in faith. The icon depicts the Most Holy Theotokos crowned with a crown (“Queen of Heaven”). In her right hand is the scepter, and with her left hand she supports the God-child on her knees. The infant Christ raises his hand as an orator (rhetorician), speaking in court in defense of all unjustly accused and afflicted, and with his left he holds a small ball – a power, a symbol of power over the world.

The name of the Icon is derived from the words of the Gospel of Luke, “Call upon your humble servant for humility.” The Savior turns Her face to those who pray, as if to say: “Call upon those who appeal to You with prayer, who so ask for your intercession.” Those who address the shrine with sincere prayer, with a pure heart, an open soul, will surely receive help. The Blessed Virgin Mary will pray for the one who is asking in the face of her Son, and the request will be heard.

How does she help? These are: situations that make a person suffer; a variety of diseases – psychological, physical, fatal, incurable; helping the dead, who before death did not have time to pray for their sins and repent before the Savior (relatives should sincerely pray for the soul of the deceased); housing issues; tempted thoughts, temptations, unwillingness to go to church, to pray; unwillingness of a loved one to repent of sins (the prayer of those close to the icon “Call for humility” will pacify a person).
